Signs & Symptoms

Mast cell tumors are a malignant tumor that originate in the dermal layer of the skin. These tumors can arise from any area of the body, and may have a variety of appearances.

Affected Animals

In dogs, mast cell tumors are the most common tumor and account for approximately 20% of all skin tumors. In general, Boston terriers, boxers, pugs, bull terriers, Weimaraners, golden retrievers and Chinese Shar Peis are predisposed breeds.

Complications & Prognosis

The prognosis for completely removed tumors is excellent.

Treatment

Surgical removal is the preferred method of treatment for all mast cell tumors. Wide margins are required to ensure the entire tumor is excised. Antihistamines are commonly prescribed following excision to help fight the secondary effects of the tumor

Diagnosis

The diagnosis is typically made with a fine needle aspirate. The veterinarian can then distinguish the mast cells by looking at them under the microscope.
